How Does Therapeutic Joint Injection Work?
There are many strategies of Therapeutic Joint Injection, including the use of autogenous (self) cells and allogeneic (donor) cells, to take the place of missing tissue, effectively replacing it both structurally and functionally, or to contribute to tissue healing. The body’s innate healing response may also be leveraged to promote regeneration. The ultimate aim of Therapeutic Joint Injection is to return the patient to full health with respect to the particular condition.

PRP therapy begins with a collection of the patient’s blood. The blood sample is placed in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma from the other components of whole blood.
Practitioners then inject the concentrated platelets into the site of the injury. Platelets function as a natural reservoir for growth factors that are essential to repair injured tissues.
The growth factors that the platelets stimulate tissue recovery by increasing collagen production, enhancing tendon proliferation, and tenocyte-related gene and protein expression. These growth factors also stimulate blood flow and cause the cartilage to become more firm and resilient. PRP activates tenocytes to proliferate quickly and produce collagen to repair injured tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and muscles.
What is Platelet Rich Plasma(PRP)?
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a form of Therapeutic Joint Injection and is essentially an increased concentration of autologous platelets suspended in a small amount of plasma after centrifugation.
Platelets play a fundamental role in hemostasis and are a natural source of growth factors. GenVisc 850 is from a class of products known as hyaluronic acid, sodium hyaluronate, or hyaluronan (HA), which is also referred to as viscosupplementation therapy. It’s used in a nonsurgical procedure that helps supplement the viscous properties of the fluid in your knee joint. GenVisc 850 is approved for patients who have not adequately responded or have failed to find sufficient relief from simple analgesics, exercise or physical therapy.
Viscosupplementation was first used in Europe and Asia, and was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1997. Several preparations of hyaluronic acid are now commercially available and are covered by most major insurance providers including Medicare.

Therapeutic Joint Injection Therapy works without Surgery by using a cushioning agent for homologous supplementation. Our autologous and homologous injection starts the process of healing immediately after the first injection and helps to begin to provide cushioning between the joints for relief for many types of chronic pain symptoms.
You’ll likely need to stop taking certain medications that thin your blood, like aspirin and ibuprofen, before you get any injections. You may also need to take a break from certain vitamins or supplements, such as omega-3 fatty acids. Your doctor can tell you exactly what you need to do to prepare for these shots.
Therapeutic Joint Injection Therapy doesn’t usually cause major side effects. Our providers will discuss this with you and answer any questions.
You might notice some soreness and bruising in the area that received injections. If you feel sharp or intense pain, let your doctor know.
Recovery time can vary, but in most cases it’s zero. Most of our patients can resume their daily work activities immediately after the treatment.
For most patients, the treatment is almost completely painless and they are able to get back to doing what they need to in no time at all.
In fact a lot of our patients have the procedure done over lunch and are able to work the rest of their day.
Viscosupplementation can significantly reduce pain while improving the mobility and function of the joint to make activities of daily living and even athletic or strenuous exercise less painful.
Viscosupplementation is a procedure that involves injecting hyaluronic acid, a gel-like fluid, directly into the joint. Hyaluronic acid is found naturally in the synovial fluid surrounding the joints to reduce friction during movement. The injection goes into effect by lubricating the joint and assisting the synovial fluid to create more cushion. This works to reduce pain and improve the range of motion or the mobility of the joint.
During a viscosupplementation treatment, your doctor will administer between three and five injections to the affected area. These will typically be injected one week apart from each other.
While not all patients experience relief with viscosupplementation, many patients report feeling a decrease in pain over the course of a three- to five-week period after the injections are administered. Patients report that the most significant level of pain relief comes two to three months after the first injection.
Depending on the patient, the length of pain relief will vary. Patients often report improvement of symptoms for six months or more after the treatment.
As with other types of injections, patients who receive viscosupplementation generally report feeling slight pain at the site of the injection. Swelling, heat, itchiness and bruising around the joint can also occur.
What Is GenVisc850?
GenVisc 850 is a product that is injected into your knees to treat knee pain from joint inflammation and stiffness due to a disease known as osteoarthritis (OA).
GenVisc 850 is from a class of products known as hyaluronic acid, sodium hyaluronate, or hyaluronan (HA), which is also referred to as viscosupplementation therapy. It’s used in a nonsurgical procedure that helps supplement the viscous properties of the fluid in your knee joint. GenVisc 850 is approved for patients who have not adequately responded or have failed to find sufficient relief from simple analgesics, exercise or physical therapy.
The fluid (synovial fluid) in your knee helps to lubricate and cushion the joint during movement. The major component in the synovial fluid is hyaluronic acid, the equivalent active component of GenVisc 850. One of the early effects of OA is to break down this fluid, making it less effective. It is thought that GenVisc 850 helps restore the synovial fluid to a more healthy state, thereby reducing the pain of OA.
GenVisc 850 is an intra-articular injection, which is injected into the space of the affected joint, between your thigh and calf bone.
GenVisc 850 is supported by the largest and longest duration double blinded clinical study of hyaluronic acids for knee osteoarthritis. Clinical studies demonstrated that five injections one week apart provide optimal pain relief. Some patients have derived benefits following the third injection. The effectiveness of less than three injections has not been evaluated.
Each patient’s response to GenVisc 850 may vary. Depending on the severity of your OA, degree of pain, and pre-existing medical conditions. In some patients, successful treatment may reduce pain within the first week after treatment begins. However, based upon clinical trials, most patients experience pain relief after their third injection of GenVisc 850 given at weekly intervals.
You and your healthcare provider will decide upon the best course of treatment. Injection of subcutaneous lidocaine or similar local anesthetic may be recommended by your healthcare provider prior to injection of GenVisc 850. (See GenVisc 850 Patient Information)
Each patient reacts differently to GenVisc 850 treatment. The benefits of GenVisc 850 can last for months. In clinical studies many patients experience 6 months or more pain relief. There are reports in the literature of pain relief beyond 6 months.
GenVisc 850 is approved and has been determined to be safe and effective. It has also been used throughout the world over the past 20 years.† Now approved in 64 countries, with over 45 million syringes distributed worldwide.
It is recommended that you avoid strenuous activities such as jogging, tennis, and heavy lifting for at least 48 hours after receiving an injection. Your healthcare provider will advise you about the level of activity that is right for you. Most patients are able to maintain their normal daily activities after receiving GenVisc 850 treatment.
Because GenVisc 850 is injected directly into the joint rather than administered systemically, and there are no known drug interactions, you may be able to take other medications with it. GenVisc 850 is not known to interfere with other pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs. The safety and effectiveness of the use of GenVisc 850 at the same time as other intra-articular injections, such as steroids, has not been established. Because it is administered locally it is unlikely that you will observe any benefit in joints not specifically injected. You should discuss all of your current medications and vitamin supplements with your physician on a periodic basis.
Avoid this product if you have a known hypersensitivity (allergy) to GenVisc 850 or HA products such as rash, itching, hives, flushing, swelling of the face, tongue or throat, and/or difficulty breathing.
Avoid in people with infections or skin diseases in the area of the injection site.
Some side effects may occur during the use of GenVisc 850, with symptoms such as knee pain, inflammation, reddening, swelling appearing at the injection site and/or joint pain. Tell your healthcare provider if you experience any side effects after treatment of GenVisc 850.
Most insurance carriers and Medicare cover GenVisc 850. The process of obtaining reimbursement varies from plan to plan so talk with your doctor’s office and your insurance provider before you begin treatment to find out if GenVisc 850 is covered.
Your healthcare provider is the best person to advise you on any course of treatment. GenVisc 850 is approved for the treatment of knee pain due to Osteoarthritis of the knee in patients who do not get enough relief from simple over the counter pain medication or from exercise and physical therapy.
